    Job title: Senior Construction and Engineering Underwriter

    Salary: £95,000

    Location: London


    PURPOSE OF ROLE 

    Lawes Consulting Group is proud to be working with a leading global (Re)insurer specialising in Construction & Engineering risks. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Underwriter to join a respected team, playing a key role in assessing and managing complex risks while supporting international growth and collaboration.


    RESPONSIBILITIES 

    • Review and underwrite new business based on risk assessment and market data
    • Negotiate terms with brokers and clients to optimise profitability
    • Ensure all underwriting decisions follow internal policies and procedures
    • Work closely with global teams to align processes and maintain documentation
    • Support junior underwriters through knowledge sharing and peer reviews
    • Uphold compliance standards and contribute to regulatory requirements
    • Strengthen and maintain broker and client relationships
    • Contribute to business planning and new product development
    • Collaborate with internal teams (Actuarial, Legal, Compliance, etc.)
    • Promote brand presence through marketing and relationship-building efforts

    EXPERIENCE 

    • 10+ years in underwriting or related insurance experience, preferably in Construction & Engineering
    • Progressing toward or holding CII qualification
    • Strong understanding of underwriting practices and market dynamics

    DAY-TO-DAY 

    • Assess incoming proposals and issue underwriting decisions
    • Communicate with brokers to negotiate terms and manage expectations
    • Maintain accurate documentation and risk files
    • Attend meetings with cross-functional and international teams
    • Monitor portfolio performance and support business development
    • Assist with training and mentoring colleagues
    • Stay updated on market trends and compliance requirements

    SKILLS 

    • Strong analytical and decision-making skills
    • Excellent written and verbal communication
    • High attention to detail and accuracy
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
    • Team player with strong interpersonal skills
    • Able to prioritise, multitask, and perform under pressure
    • Proactive, self-driven, and customer-focused
