Job title: Commercial P&C Underwriter – Existing Business
Salary: £50,000 – £60,000
Location: Essex – 3 days in the office
PURPOSE OF ROLE
Lawes is recruiting on behalf of a leading name in the commercial insurance market for an experienced Property & Casualty Underwriter. This is a key role focused on underwriting mid-market new business across a broad territory. You will contribute to a £30M GWP operation, delivering tailored solutions and driving regional growth through strong broker engagement. Hybrid working available – Monday and Friday work from home.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Underwrite mid-market risks, primarily Property & Casualty (P&C)
- Determines the desirability of accepting or rejecting business risks. Prices exposures in accordance with filed and approved rate levels, discretionary pricing mechanisms, and business unit guidelines.
- Identifies the need, recommends and evaluates additional risk assessment information including inspection, financial reports and statements.
- Coordinates individual risk underwriting actions with other departments to assure the highest level of customer satisfaction while meeting production and business goals.
- Performs product development and marketing activities including identifying producer relationships within assigned market to optimize best solutions for distribution, identifies and suggests new and modified products, identifies producers for business/marketing programs, and analyses producers and market opportunities.
- Maintains ongoing liaison with producers to obtain supplemental underwriting information, evaluate risks, decline risks, analyse and interpret coverage, explain underwriting requirements and expectations, and present terms.
- Regularly interfaces with customers to provide service and to keep abreast of customer issues.
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 3 years’ underwriting experience within the commercial insurance sector
- Broad experience underwriting mid-market risks across multiple commercial lines
SKILLS
- Strong risk analysis and technical underwriting capabilities
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills
- Confident in planning, decision-making, and product development
- In-depth understanding of regulatory and compliance frameworks
- Commercially focused with a results-driven mindset
